Our aim is to give every Liverpool fan in Hong Kong the chance to officially register their support for Liverpool FC. We want as many people as possible to become an active part of the passionate and enthusiastic community of Reds supporters in Hong Kong and to share in the memorable moments associated with what we believe to be the greatest team in the world. Along the way, we hope to raise money for our nominated charity, Camp Quality.
The OLSC watches all Liverpool games at Amici in Wan Chai. Managed first by Juri and now by Uddie, both “honorary scousers”, Amici has been looking after us since early-2006. With 20% discount on all food and drink, two large-screen viewing areas, friendly staff and the freedom to show pre-game films and host fund-raising events, Amici provides us with an excellent venue for watching all live games.
The Official Liverpool Supporters’ Club Hong Kong Expat Branch has its origins 5 years ago in The Dublin Jack, an Irish pub situated in a former British colony administered by Communist China. Through cosmic alignment – or perhaps because DJ was handy for a quick pint on the way to the bars of Lan Kwai Fong – a small group of us, all like-minded Reds fans, found ourselves gathering for live games.
Though strong of heart and possessing a Guinness-fuelled iron will, we were a disorganised rabble who lacked direction. What was required was a visionary, a man able to take this raw energy and mould it into something dynamic, something vital.
Unfortunately, such a man failed to materialise and so instead it fell upon Mr. Chris Davies to inaugurate and oversee the first OLSC Branch in Hong Kong. Harnessing the passion of literally tens of supporters, “Chairman” Chris did a fantastic job of raising the profile of the Club and increasing the membership considerably. During his tenure, our link with the charity Camp Quality was established. Camp Quality continues to be our nominated charity and is the beneficiary of all our fundraising.
Perhaps the highlight of Chris’s chairmanship was the visit of Liverpool FC to Hong Kong and our invitation to one of their private training sessions, photos of which you can see in our Gallery.
In 2004, with a job well done, Chris handed over to Mr. Russ Green, a boot-room boy well-versed in the pass-and-move Liverpool groove.
Which was just as well, as the club left Dublin Jack, passed on to another bar and moved to a third.
Precipitated by the sad demise of the original Dublin Jack, the Club found itself in need of a new home. After a short stay with our friends at Bulldog’s, and with the sound of Disco reverberating in our ears, Russ guided the Club to its current haven of Amici in Wanchai.
To date, the highlight of the Amici era would have to be the night of the FA Cup Final against West Ham. As well as witnessing one hell of a game in an amazing atmosphere, we also managed to raise $6000 for Camp Quality.
With an ever-increasing membership, the move to Amici also coincided with the establishment of a Supporters’ Club Committee to deal with the continually expanding activities of the Branch.
Now in it’s second year, the Committee has introduced many different concepts in order to try and engage and involve members as fully as possible including this website, newsletters, fixture-based events, discounts on food, drink and clothing, exclusive merchandise, a Club team, charity activities and access to tickets for LFC games at Anfield.
From very humble beginnings, the Official Liverpool Supporters’ Club has expanded beyond all recognition and we are proud of the diversity of the membership base, which includes nationalities such as British, Hong Kong Chinese, Malaysian, Indonesian, Indian, Australian and Canadian.
Bill Shankly once remarked that he would like to be remembered as a man who “...built up a family of people who could hold their heads up high and say, ’We’re Liverpool’.”
Well, we may be in Hong Kong, but we’re certainly Liverpool.
Welcome to the family.
