SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT

Rob Kelly

Our next Supporter Spotlight falls upon Rob Kelly, who tells us about being associated with Magnum P.I., scoring with his ear for the HK Reds in Kuala Lumpur and wearing his shell suit on every flight with Cathay!

Tell us more about your background.
Born in Toronto, my family moved back to Liverpool when I was 5. Went to school and University there and left to go back to Canada at 21. Met my wife, Laura, shortly after (she’s the Canadian that can be seen at Amici asking what’s going on! ) and bounced around Canada for almost 10 years, eventually ending up in Hong Kong where we have been for 3 years now.

We hear you are a Cathay pilot. Have you done any "Top Gun" stunts?
The most dangerous thing we get to do in the planes these days is drink Cathay’s coffee!

Got any nicknames?
Was known as "Higgins" in Canada ‘cos I apparently sounded like the English fella from Magnum P.I.

Any hobbies? Apart from drinking beer...
Although you wouldn't know it, I play a lot of (sometimes the body says too much) football. I played for 4 teams last year including CX, Swire, G.G.F.C. and of course the Hong Kong Reds - leading to my proudest moment as the Reds joint-top scorer in the 2007 KL Futsal Tournament. I also really enjoy travelling and I eat way too much.

How did you hear about the OLSC Hong Kong?
I think it was online or maybe a drunken night in Mes Amis downstairs.

What do you like about the OLSC Hong Kong?
It showed my wife I wasn’t the only one crazy enough to get up at 3 in the morning to watch a match.

Anyone else in your family a Red?
Can’t think of anyone who isn’t a Red. My poor Gran can’t take too many more of these Champions League nights though!

On the recent Futsal tour to KL with the HK Reds, you scored a blinding goal. Talk us through that.
Well err, it was a great team effort err, I couldn’t have done it without the support of the lads err, they were brilliant in that match, err. Honestly I think it went in off my ear which fooled the keeper. They all count though. Roll on the 2009 tournament. I think we’ll be contenders for the treble now we know what the hell is going on!

Liverpool FC

Favourite Liverpool goal?
Aldridge's volley from Barnes’ cross in the 1988 FA Cup semi-final. Shame about the pen in the final though, John.

Fondest football memories?
Apart from my Hong Kong Reds debut, my first match at Anfield - 5-0 versus Forest in ‘88. Also, my first match at Wembley - the Coca Cola Cup final against Bolton in ’95. Although I wasn’t there, Istanbul takes some beating as the fondest though.

Who should Rafa buy this summer in the transfer market?
I think we need a striker who can get us 20 goals a season. No wait, we actually got one of them last year. What was the excuse this year? A winger, that’s right. I hear Harry Kewell might be available on a free. Seriously, I think Deco might sit behind Torres quite nicely.

Dalglish or Beardsley?
Gotta be Dalglish.

Rush or Aldridge?
Although I was a huge Aldo fan and never thought we should have sold him, how can you argue with Rush’s 340-odd goals? Torres has gotta do what he did this year for the next 10 and win at least 5 titles to get close!

The Important Stuff

What was the last CD you bought?
Rainbows by Radiohead was the last album I bought on iTunes. I think the last CD was Stadium Arcadium by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

What’s your favourite TV show?
Lost or Entourage.

What’s your favourite drink?
Guinness.

Favourite Asian destination?
Was pleasantly surprised by K.L. when we were down there. So far though, Hong Kong has been the place where I’ve had most fun.

What are you listening to on your iPod?
Bit sad, but I really like the new Coldplay single Violet Hill. Will have to wait to see what the rest of the album is like when it comes out.

If you were stranded on a desert island with one person, who would you choose?

My wife, Laura. I think Kate from Lost would be a good second choice - only for her island survival skills of course!

Three words that describe you.
Shell suit winner!

Rob in his normal dress attire!

Tell us something we don’t know about you.
My first (and only non-aviation) job was for Ladbrokes at Anfield, taking bets on the match. The only drawback was having to also work at Woodison.
