SUPPORTER SPOTLIGHT

Lily Lam

Meko OhOur next Supporter Spotlight falls upon Lily Lam, who tells us about never seeing any meat & two veg in a men’s dressing room as referee, stalking Liverpool players and fantasizing about Gary Lineker!

For the supporters, tell us more about your background?
I’m a British Born Chinese (BBC), born in London and raised in Brighton. I did my undergrad and postgrad in Liverpool and taught in a secondary school surrounded by football mad kids. My ex-husband is a red, along with most of his family, my best friend is a red so it’s hard not to be caught up in the red frenzy. I spent 12 years on and off in Liverpool and have a definite affinity with the city. There’s no place like the ‘pool.

How did you find out about the OLSC Hong Kong?
I checked you guys out on the website and thought it would be great to watch some football down the pub with fellow fans.

What do you like about the supporters club?
All the friendly faces, cheaper beer and food.

We hear you are a qualified referee, how did you get into that?

Well I played through university and then coached in America for 3 summers and decided to see the beautiful game from another perspective. I went on a course and then sat an oral and written exam.

And have you ever been into the men’s changing room after the games?
Unfortunately no, I usually turned up fully clothed in my ref’s kit. The teams weren’t used to women refs and then if they did have a changing room I had to share with other fellas!

See any meat and two veg?
Only in my dreams!

C’mon, explain the offside rule?
When the attacking player is closer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second last opponent when the ball is played.

Do you think a woman could referee a Premiership match?
Oh I often think that. I would love to have a pop. Anyone have any contacts... Will just have to put up with ‘whose the bitch in black?’ instead!

Got any nicknames?
Lamster, Miss Whiplash, Lilo Lil (classic 80s Bread character).

Any Hobbies?
Football, running, hiking, exercise in general and travelling.

What’s your day job?
I am a teacher.

Liverpool FC

Favourite Liverpool goal?
Can I have two? Got to have the equaliser against Milan in the CL final. My god, Liverpool erupted that night and we danced in the Williamson Square fountains. And Gerrard equalising to make it 3-3 against West Ham in the FA Cup final.

Heroes?
Gary Lineker when I was younger. Still remember his 3 goals against Poland in Mexico 86.

Sexiest player? Ugliest player?
When I was a young lass it was Jamie Redknapp. Stevie G for his fit bod, fancy a bit of Beckham, Torres for his youthful looks. Ugly ones? Anyone who plays for the blue shite.

Met any famous Liverpool players?
All the time when I was in Liverpool! Mr Alonso famously asked us to turn the music down when I was dining with some friends (it was my birthday!), my mate Pepe outside an Italian restaurant, Heskey in the old days in Sainsburys, following Jamie Redknapp into the unisex toilets at a bar at the Albert Dock. The Liverpool players drink in Newz bar and it’s not too hard to spot them.

We hear you blagged your way into the training session at Mong Kok Stadium in July when the lads were here?
Well I just turned up hoping to get in and saw Ian and the rest of the gang going in. Next thing you know Mr. Adidas slaps a sticker on my ‘chest’ and says I can go in with my 2 Irish mates. Loved it! Closed door session – legendary.

Will Liverpool finally win the Premiership this season?
I hope so. I think it’s about time Liverpool gave the likes of Arsenal and Man U a run for their money.

What do you of Rafa’s rotation policy?
Excellent. Liverpool need to pick from a bigger squad of quality players and I think he’s definitely moving in the right direction.

The Beatles.

Wine, Beer, G n T, Caipirinha’s – oh sorry can I only choose one??? Last time? On a junk where I had not eaten breakfast and then there was no veggie food so I drank all day on an empty stomach. Passed out on the boat.

Favourite holiday destination? And why?
Anywhere with stunning views and fresh air. I like hiking and I have just come back from Tanzania where I climbed Kilimanjaro and it was an amazing experience.

If you were stuck in a lift with one another person, who would it be?
Robbie Williams.

It’s got to be Pepe. Have you seen the size of him?
