| Hong Kong Reds 3 v 1 Arsenal Supporters Club 22nd November 2010, KO 7.30pm, Kings Park, Pitch 2 Coach: Simon ’Suits you Sir’ Forder Mentor: Dave ’Benitez’ Oh Team: Dave Oh, Jase Li, Scotty Hooper, Chinese Keeper Alan, Richie Mckeown, Arno, Donald, Justin Cresser, Pete Gunn, Wes Ng, James Ho, David, Steven G, Adrian So, So the big questions on the tip of the tongue of the Liverpool Supporters this week were how were we going to perform against Arsenal and how was the new manager going to inspire the team to greatness? The observant among you will realise that I am referring to the mighty Hong Kong supporters’ team, not Roy and the boys. ![]() Unlike Roy’s boys, the supporters’ team showed great character to comeback from a goal down and go on to win 3-1, but more on that in a moment. The squad comprised of several players yet to play together and the new boys combined wonderfully to produce passing and movement reminiscent of the great LFC teams of the 70’s and 80’s. At times the Arsenal team were made to look like men against boys as they were left in the wake of silky skills from new boy Hooper and the flamboyant combination of Richie and Arno. The new boys formed fantastic partnerships and some solid football was played. Jason showed a lot of energy and took an early opportunity to have a strike on goal, although he had obviously forgot his scoring boots and had to collect the ball from Mong Kok! Despite a positive start the team went a goal down, following a tactical substitution error by the Manager. Oh was brought on at left back and was exposed for pace by the blistering speed of the gunners winger, well at least that is the tarted up version and saying that Dave had a turning circle slower than an extinct Woolly Mammoth would be unkind. The winger put in an amazing cross that flew into the top corner like a scud missile. He claimed the goal, which was against the play, and the Manager was left to make a difficult decision. What happened next was to change the face of the game and the Gaffer, whose neck was on the line, owes his career to the inspirational Pete Gunn, who moved from centre back to centre forward. ![]() So 0-1 at half time. A rousing half time talk was followed by an inspirational second half. Rolling substitutions between the dynamic Justin and Stevie G, with David went on to form a new partnership that was to become rock solid. Hoops and Jas formed an amazing understanding in the centre of the park and bossed the game, while Pete provided a well need outlet up front. A tactical change in the centre forward pairing allowed Gunn to be unleashed and led to the first of 3 second half goals. Arno, who had been terrorising the opposition down the wing, popped up in the box and scored a well taken header; score 1-1. The flood gates were ajar and shortly later Gunn moved in for the kill; 2-1. Set pieces were providing many opportunities for the mighty reds and a well constructed corner led to third goal. Some may say that this goal was beautifully crafted by skill from the gods, as it was eloquently flicked into the goal by the golden boots of Hoops, personally I think he was confused and tried to clear the Arsenal goal line and accidently sliced it in ... those there can be the jury! Score 3-1. ![]() At this point I would like to mention the awesome goalkeeping of Chinese ‘Bruce Grobbelaar’ Alan who frequently stepped up to sweeper and cleared the lines but also kept the ball out when Arsenal were awarded a controversial penalty late on. Bandy legs stood tall as the centre forward placed the ball, and then replaced it after Jason helpfully moved it again! Kick taken, miss, the right result. Overall, a fantastic triumph and well done to all the lads. Man of the Match is a difficult one to call as many players stepped up but for me Scott Hooper had a terrific all round game so takes the accolade. me compared favourably to Sylar from Heroes (and perhaps he |
